Tangles and the Mona Lisa

چکیده
We show how an image can, in principle, be described by the tangles of the graph of its pixels. The tangle-tree theorem provides a nested set of separations that efficiently distinguish all the distinguishable tangles in a graph. This translates to a small data set from which the image can be reconstructed. The tangle duality theorem says that a graph either has a certainorder tangle or a tree-structure witnessing that this cannot exist. This tells us the maximum resolution at which the image contains meaningful

A painting consists of objects which are arranged in specific ways. The art of painting is drawing the objects, which can be considered as known trends, in an expressive manner. Detrended methods are suitable for characterizing the artistic works of the painter by eliminating trends. It means that we study the paintings, regardless of its apparent purpose, as a stochastic process. We apply mult...
متن کاملMona Lisa is always happy – and only sometimes sad
The worldwide fascination of da Vinci's Mona Lisa has been dedicated to the emotional ambiguity of her face expression. In the present study we manipulated Mona Lisa's mouth curvature as one potential source of ambiguity and studied how a range of happier and sadder face variants influences perception. In two experimental conditions we presented different stimulus ranges with different step siz...
متن کاملMona lisa syndrome: a case report
The mysterious smile of the famed portrait ‘The Mona Lisa’ has confused both art historians and researchers for many years. The nature of the model’s enigmatic smile has been explained as the smile of a new, joyous mother, Lisa Gherardini, who had developed Bell’s palsy during her recent pregnancy. Bell palsy which is acute in onset, unilateral, and is considered to be idiopathic is the most co...
متن کاملThe Mona Lisa Gaze Effect as an Objective Metric for Perceived Cospatiality
We propose to utilize the Mona Lisa gaze effect for an objective and repeatable measure of the extent to which a viewer perceives an object as cospatial. Preliminary results suggest that the metric behaves as expected.
متن کاملMechanics of painted wooden panels from the cultural heritage: the case of Mona Lisa
The mechanical response of the wooden support of Mona Lisa to the action of the frame has been modeled using finite elements and compared to observations by optical techniques. The risk of propagation of the existing crack, estimated through the calculation of an elastic energy release rate, was found negligible.
